So, what’s the answer if we don’t have enough cops to effectively enforce our traffic laws?

First, let’s better define the problem. Too many people drive like maniacs. Why?
Simple, these unsafe drivers don’t think they’ll get caught; because they, like us, don’t ever see a good cop when one is needed.

The solution, what if had a weapon that would almost guarantee everyone that drives poorly would get caught----- including drunks and wild teen drivers? Do you think our roads would get safe practically overnight?

From our last posting let’s continue the discussion of “not enough good cops.” It’s true, good cops are never seen enough from the perspective of we safe drivers.

But my guess is reckless and careless drivers see far too many cops enforcing today’s ineffective traffic laws. So, which is it: do we have to much enforcement or to little enforcement on our roads?

At Parents For Safe Roads our entire highway safety plan is based on the fact that people drive like fools for one reason and one reason only.

The unsafe see far too few police; think they can get away with reckless and aggessive driving, period.

We have far too little enforcement. And, there are many reasons for this including there is a big voting block of unsafe drivers. In fact, we have so many poor drivers / voters the law enforcement cops think its political suicide to really make our roads safe.

How many times have you been driving on the road, and some crazy passes you like you are sitting still? Or, someone aggressively changes lanes while everyone else is patiently waiting their turn?

And, right after witnessing a hostile action on your car; how many times have you then said, “where is a good cop when you need one?”

After decades of driving I’ve finally seen that good cop at the right time. Folk’s I have never witnessed this before. Yesterday while coming home from work, after nearly being blown off the road by cabby a copy actually pulled him over. I wanted to stop and kiss the cop.

Folks, fill in the blank. The point is, problem solving 101 teaches that step #1 in problem solving is: identify the problem.

So, why can’t Highway Safety Officials do that? If they could riding on our roads would not be so threatening ------------------- like every ride.

For example, for my 39 years in municipal Highway Safety I’d estimate that 99.9% of our efforts were to make safety improvements at intersections and along street segments as if the reckless and careless driving of motorists had nothing to do with all the accidents. Only problem with this focus on roads; again most all traffic accidents are caused by driver error. Do you see why “identifying the problem” is so critical.

If today’s traffic safety engineers took the time to first identify the problem they would conclude that it is indeed the driver stupid. Maybe then we could get to the solution to all the mayhem on our highways which would be driver focused not roadway improvement focused.

What can we learn from this. First, our interstates are statistically our safest roads. This is because such super highways are limed access--------- no intersections and no driveways.

Now here’s the dirty little secret: because these highways are so easy to drive (un-safely) you can develop some very unsafe driving habits, like aggressively following too close or tailgating.

Ever wonder why we have so many crazy drivers? In the last posting we implied it was because of politics. Well, that’s a major part of it.

The other big time reason is that our nation’s traffic judges tend to enforce the laws they think work best ……………………………………. and, they don’t know squat about how to eliminate traffic crashes.

For instance, we all know most traffic tickets are for speeding. In fact, most would agree that this is good strategy. Ignorance is bliss.

I mean, do you know how long most all of our traffic enforcement has focused on speeders. Now, ask yourself, why is this?

Simple, the judges of the world want evidence that the law breaker busted a traffic law. They want hard core evidence with as little judgement as possible. More to the point, measuring speed is simple, reliable, and in short very good evidence from a machine.

Never mind that most speeding (i.e., above a posted speed limit) is not a good measure of a driver’s ability to avoid traffic crashes. Folks, if catching speeders were effective we would have eliminated traffic crashes decades ago. Again, stopping speeders; and an occasional promoting of “don’t drink and drive” campaigns is about all there is to our highway safety. In short, catching people driving 10 mph over an improperly posted speed limit doesn’t work, except to generate income for the police.

Which Traffic Laws For Traffic Highway Safety?

From the Radio Free Oklahoma Blog we get what’s wrong with today’s traffic law enforcement. Here the blog’s author introduces the concept of fraudulent citation writing (i.e., primarily for government revenue) by quoting Chad Dornsife:

“ Today, more than 90% of traffic violations issued; and the
majority of traffic stops, have no factual foundation from
A safety perspective.”

The point is; most enforcement is aimed at enforcing speed limits that are simply not designed to minimize traffic accidents. In fact, most of today’s speed limits are set via politics instead of based on sound traffic engineering principles (See Best Highway Safety Practices web site). In other words, speed limits are mostly lower than engineers want because “we the people” usually think lower is better.

But there is some real negative here.

First, drivers become very cynical about safe driving laws because they know the police are enforcing laws, not for safety, but for income.

Second, and more important, enforcing the wrong speed limits does not minimize traffic accidents. We keep having 42,000 deaths and tens of millions of injuries on our roads every year.

SADD and MADD Need More Tickets Written

No One Is Watching



Today’s highway safety story of the day is titled, “ Trooper, I didn’t write enough tickets."
Claims he got fired for not writing tickets.

Here’s the shocker: The Highway Patrol defends the firing with their official statement on the incident, “ticket quotas violate FHP policy.”

Wow, why not quotas if drivers create most of the havoc on our roads. I mean why not write bunches more tickets ---------- but for the right offences. If the Highway patrol is worried about how such a policy looks to the voter just donate the fines to a good charity. That way no one could ever blame the cops for doing it for the money.

You see "not" writing bunches of tickets sends a signal to unsafe drivers. Simply stated, these criminals don’t think about ever getting caught driving like hoodlums because well, they mostly never get caught. After all the cops are evidently taught, you don’t have to write a bunch of tickets, your bosses are not expecting you to.

Highway Safety for MADD & SADD

When Highway Safety Is Not On Public Safety Agenda
(or a Mayor's mind)


Just read one of my Mayor’s primary propaganda pieces for the year. Titled, “Citizen’s Budget Report” not one word about his crackerjack Highway Safety program.

To illustrate how significant this is, consider that in the same piece he does brag about his war on crime. In fact, he does so every chance he gets. And rightfully so.

For instance, under the section titled, Public Safety, our cops make the incredible claim that they have reduced Part I crimes an astounding 50% since 2000.

Now here’s the pertinent question, do you think he would make the same boast if traffic accidents had been reduced the same 50%? Sure he would, the fact that he never mentions traffic safety shows how low on the priority it is.

Now, let’s not get on my mayor too much; this is the way it is all over the country. Real Highway safety is out of most everyone’s mind.

Again, in this 110% political bragging piece not a word about highway safety.
